“You look mad.”

Jerald stormed past Sylla on his way out of the bridge. Her observation wasn’t well accepted. She walked with him, keeping pace.

“Is there something you need?”

“Jer, I know you and I aren’t on good terms right now, but if there’s something going on I’m here for you.”

Jerald stopped, squared off with her. He looked like he was ready to rip into her, but took a moment and a breath. Then, “You and I are done, Syl. I thought that was the status quo. After everything, I think it’s best we both go back to pretending that the other is dead.”

She didn’t blame him for that opinion, but that didn’t make it hurt any less. “I’m sorry, Jer. And I’ll apologize a thousand times if I have to. But Jon is gone, and so is Abi.”

“So now you and I just fit back together again?”

“That’s not what I’m saying.” She lowered her gaze. “You have no reason to trust me. I know that. I’m not pretending that we have a future together. But I’m still your friend.” She leaned closer. “Did Redder take command of the bridge?”

Jerald shrugged, slapped his thigh. “What do you think?”

Sylla nodded. “I know. It was an obvious question. But… is she going to follow Eben’s advice?”

Jerald pursed his lips. “You know…” He stopped himself, shook his head, and started walking on.

Sylla followed him to the lift, got inside with him. They were alone, but it felt more like they were by themselves.

“I don’t have anything more to say, Syl.”

The lift started coming to a halt.

“That’s fine. When you do…”

The doors opened. Sathi was there blocking their path. Jerald and Sylla both stared up at her metal frame for a moment, each of them exchanging glances.

“I’ve been looking for you, Colonel. And you can help, too.”

Jerald stepped out of the lift, Sathi getting out of his way. “I’m not going to be a part of some crazy plan to do whatever it is you’re thinking of doing.”
